  • The Pearl Thief

    Elizabeth Wein

Paperback (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, May 1, 2018)
Before Verity . . . there was Julie. When fifteen-year-old Julia Beaufort-Stuart wakes up in the hospital, she knows the lazy summer break she'd imagined won't be exactly what she anticipated. And once she returns to her grandfather's estate, a bit banged up but alive, she begins to realize that her injury might not have been an accident. One of her family's employees is missing, and he disappeared on the very same day she landed in the hospital. Desperate to figure out what happened, she befriends Euan McEwen, the Scottish Traveler boy who found her when she was injured, and his standoffish sister, Ellen. As Julie grows closer to this family, she witnesses firsthand some of the prejudices they've grown used to-a stark contrast to her own upbringing-and finds herself exploring thrilling new experiences that have nothing to do with a missing-person investigation. Her memory of that day returns to her in pieces, and when a body is discovered, her new friends are caught in the crosshairs of long-held biases about Travelers. Julie must get to the bottom of the mystery in order to keep them from being framed for the crime. This exhilarating coming-of-age story, a prequel to the Printz Honor Book Code Name Verity, returns to a beloved character just before she first takes flight.

The unforgettable story of Rose Justice is forged from heart-wrenching courage, resolve, and the slim, bright chance of survival. Praise for Rose Under Fire * "Wein masterfully sets up a stark contrast between the innocent American teen's view of an untarnished world and the realities of the Holocaust. [A]lthough the story's action follows [Code Name Verity]'s, it has its own, equally incandescent integrity. Rich in detail, from the small kindnesses of fellow prisoners to harrowing scenes of escape and the Nazi Doctors' Trial in Nuremburg, at the core of this novel is the resilience of human nature and the power of friendship and hope." -Kirkus, starred review * "Wein excels at weaving research seamlessly into narrative and has crafted another indelible story about friendship borne out of unimaginable adversity." -Publishers Weekly, starred review

  • Sinbad the Sailor and other Stories. Five Minute Bedtime Adventure Stories.: Retold in easy to read words for preschool and children ages 6 - 8.

    Elizabeth White

    eBook
Sinbad the sailor and other great stories. Some of the best loved tales are the myths and legends from foreign countries. The timeless tales of Sinbad, Thor, Odin and others are full of adventure, bravery, luck and the fact that actions have consequences. I have included some less well known internationally, but very well known in the culture of their origin, stories such as Cuchulain of Ulster and Lakshmi of India. These classic tales can be inaccessible as the language is old fashioned and hard to read so these are my own versions of these stories in an easier to read format. As with all my children’s books these are designed to be a 5 minute story for you to read aloud, but are also simple enough for your children to read themselves. Each story had a rhyme about the main character to add interest such as I’M SINBAD THE SAILOR MAN,IT’S BOLD AND BRAVE I AM,I NEVER SHOW FEAR,WHEN DANGER IS NEAR,I’M SINBAD THE SAILOR MAN.This adds interest and helps the children connect with the story. They can join in. Do this where you come across the block capitals. There are also excellent language development ideas in the stories and important words come at the end of the chapter to talk about and explain.Children love words that are different and often find it easy to recognise them and learn their meaning. This helps both their oral and written English immensely and it’s fun. Words such as ruse, gloat, perish, tyrant are great to repeat to grandparents!Enjoy!
